  • Tooth & Nail: Cross Cultural Influences in Contemporary Ceramics

    Tooth & Nail is a dynamic exploration of contemporary artistic practice and cultural influences between Asian and Australian ceramicists curated by Stephen Gallagher. The ceramics on show reflect shared artistic sensibilities and influences throughout the Asia-Pacific region, producing works that are uniquely different from those of American or European practitioners.

    This exhibition of hybrid contemporary ceramics celebrates the cross-cultural pollination between East and West, and features artists from Australia, Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Artists include Joe Chan Kiu Hong, Sally Cleary, Kris Coad, Andrei Davidoff, Zhou Jie, Josephine Tsui Tze Kwan, Robyn Phelan, Jane Sawyer, Kevin White, Fiona Wong and Monxi Wu.

    Melissa Main, performer, Show Pony coach and Musician's Accomplice will be running a day-long performing workshop in Melbourne on June 1, 2013.

    Develop your performance skills by freeing your inner Show Pony. Learn performance techniques, confidence tricks and develop your own unique stage-persona to make your performance stand out.

    Class will be modified to suit participants needs. Perfect for musicians, MCs and singer-songwriters wanting to give their performance a special edge.

    Participants will work on a performance piece during the workshop and have it ready to perform by the end of the day. You are asked to bring at least one existing piece of work to focus on during the day. Bring your instruments, songs and best banter!

    Lunch provided (please advise of special requirements)

    The intricate layering of cloth, thread and mixed media hint at Jan Lowe’s water colourist background and reveals a lifelong love of the coast and inland of southeast Australia. The works in this exhibition feature a combination of textures, colours and shapes that inspires story telling with wool, paper, paint and found objects.

    Jan Lowe has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions around Victoria and is a member of the Surface Design Association.

    Darebin City Council and the Melbourne Magic Festival partner to present the Melbourne Magic Festival’s Opening Extravaganza on Sunday 23 June at Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre.

    This family friendly event gives audiences a taste of what’s in store before The Melbourne Magic Festival casts its spell across Northcote Town Hall from 1-13 July with 40 different shows.

    The Opening Extravaganza is part of Council’s Loud Mouth family program and promises to be a breath-taking two-hour spectacle of the finest magic acts.
    The event features spectacular performances from some of Australia’s top stage magicians, sleight of hand artists, comedy magicians, circus performers and special international guest Wayne Houchin (USA) - advisor to internationally revered magician and illusionist, Criss Angel. Also appearing is internationally award winning grand illusionist Tim Ellis.
