Our Youth Centres offer a place for young adults (aged 12-25) to drop-in or take part in our great programs. Decibels is a recording and rehearsal studio for those musically minded, and our Northland Youth Centre is suited for a drop-in visit while at Northland Shopping Centre.
Northland Youth Centre
A youth friendly space, providing programs and activities designed to increase young people’s social, recreational and employment skills, or networks.

Decibels Youth Music Centre
Provides low-cost recording and rehearsal facilities, music programs and resources for young people aged 12-25 who are looking to record, rehearse or extend their networking and knowledge of the contemporary music industry.

Current Decibels Youth Music Centre programs include Decibels Records and FReeZA.

Youth Programs

We run a number of interesting programs for young adults aged 12-25, including homework clubs and holiday programs, after school adventures and camps, young mothers group, music programs (Decibel Records, FReeZA), youth drop-in Centre and outreach program, and peer leadership program.

African Access Projects
Projects are targeted towards young people from a migrant or refugee background based in Darebin. All projects are facilitated in a culturally appropriate environment by Youth Services African Access Project Officer.

After School Adventure Program (ASAP)
An after school activity group for young people aged 12-16 years who live in Darebin. The eight-week program is targeted towards young people who may have limited opportunities to fund their own after school entertainment.

Priority is given to:
  • School and agency referrals
  • Young people and families with a Health Care Card
  • Young people that have not attended the program before
Fees & Charges:
$5 per session. Includes food, activities and transportation.

Baby Buzz - Young Mothers Group
A supportive informal group for young mothers living in the Darebin region who are aged up to 25 years. The program offers free lunch and time to chat with other mums, arts and craft activities, outdoor children’s playground and activities for the kids, workshops (eg massage, self-care, singing, Maternal and Child Health question and answer sessions, etc) plus regular low cost outings.

Decibels Records
The initiative is a youth-led program for people aged 12-25 who are interested in pursuing a career within the music industry. The year-long program provides opportunities for participants to gain first-hand experience in the various elements of establishing and maintaining an independent record label.

As a committee, participants work with local upcoming Darebin artists and will develop and release an EP for each act. Throughout the program, both participants and artists have the opportunity to be mentored and be exposed to networking opportunities with key industry figures. The program concludes each year with a label launch event held at Northcote Town Hall as a part of the Darebin Music Feast.

FReeZA
Freeza is part of the Victorian State Government funded FReeZA initiative that gives young people the opportunity to lead the planning and staging of live music and cultural events within their local communities.

As one of 80 state-wide providers, Darebin’s FReeZA program also provides important performance opportunities for local musicians and emerging artists to showcase their talent through competitions such as the Victorian FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands. All FReeZA events are fully supervised, drug, alcohol and smoke-free.

Northland Youth Centre Drop In
A program that supports young people to gain confidence and social skills, through meeting other young people in a fully safe and supportive environment. The Drop In program is free for young people, aged 12-21 to hang out, eat some healthy food and use any of the Centre’s consoles and activities including PS4, XBOX, Wii, air hockey, pool table and more.

Peer Leadership Program
Participants are given the opportunity to develop skills in a wide range of areas including peer helper skills, conflict resolution, program and camp planning and facilitation, event management, youth consultations, first aid, food safety and handling plus many more. During the year participants will also have the opportunity to assist with holiday and after school programs, youth leadership/participation events such as the Annual Youth Summit and The Junior Council Project, summer camps, School Road-Show events, plus more.

Summer Camps
The Summer Camps program is run over a two-week period in January each year and is aimed at a variety of youth groups who live, work or play in Darebin. The program is targeted towards young people who may have limited opportunities to fund their own holiday activities.

Fees & Charges:
$40 with a Health Care Card or $60 full price. Charges include two nights accommodation, food, transportation and activities.

Teenage Holiday Program
A school holiday activity group for young people aged 12-16 years who live, work or play in Darebin. The program is targeted towards young people who may have limited opportunities to fund their own holiday activities.

Priority is given to:
• School and agency referrals
• Young people and families with a Health Care Card
• Young people that have not attended the program before

Fees & Charges:
$30 with a Health Care Card or $50 full price. Charges include three days activities, food and transportation.

Yute Crew Outreach
An outreach program staffed by experienced youth workers that runs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturday Evening. The Yute Crew meets young people in community locations and provides a range of free activities, sports, arts, information and referrals.

Engaging young adults aged 12-25 in the areas of health, recreation and arts, education and training, and advocacy and coordination is a key focus for us.

2012-2017 Darebin Youth Engagement Strategy
The Strategy highlights Council's key strategic directions over the next five years.

  • Council will deliver services to meet the needs of young people. Services will focus on 4 priority areas of: Health Promotion, Recreation and Arts, Education and Training and Information, Advocacy and Coordination.
  • Council will dedicate and attract resources to meet the needs of young people.
  • Council will increase our responses to young people through collaboration across Council departments and with our partner agencies.
  • Council will give young people a greater voice and advocate with strength.
  • Council will lead planning for young people.

Young Entrepreneurs in the North

Do you want to start your own small business? Need some support to get your idea off the ground? The Young Entrepreneurs in the North program will support you to develop the skills required to create and run a small business through workshops, mentoring and business opportunities.

The program is run by professional young business people and will be practical and 'hands-on'.

Workshops themes include:

  • Turning an ordinary business idea into an extraordinary one
  • Learning to think like an entrepreneur
  • Making your business and you look good – learn to use CANVA
  • Going digital - Getting your business online 
  • Sell Sell Sell - How to acquire customers forever
  • Financial literacy – explaining financial literacy using fun and interactive activities
  • Pitching - Crafting your 30 second elevator pitch
  • Showcasing - Presenting what you’ve achieved to peers & invited guests
  • The program has been developed by Moreland, Darebin and Yarra council.

Who: 17 – 25 year olds who live, work or study in Darebin. 

When: Thursdays, 6pm-8.30 pm beginning 7 July and finishing 29 September.

Where: The majority of the workshops will be held at Level 1, 41 Stewart Street, Richmond.
