Best Start is a state government initiative that facilitates partnerships between families, communities, local government and service providers to work together to improve the health, development and learning of the 0 - 8 age group.

| The Darebin Best Start Model includes a small team of workers and four Interest Group Working Parties which carry out these activities. The Best Start Partnership works collaboratively to strengthen services and address vulnerability and disadvantage for Darebin children and families.
There are 19 signatories to partnership which meets bimonthly and more than 140 organisations and services participating in projects and working groups as part of their activities.

Supported Parent Group and Playgroup Initiative Strategic Framework 2009-2011 | | The City of Darebin has received funding from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to administer the Supported Parent and Playgroup Initiative (SPPI) . The funding is aimed to assist in the establishment and support of a small number of facilitated groups for vulnerable families. A strategic framework agreement between the City of Darebin and Darebin Best Start identifies target groups for the next three years. | |
The Best Start Action Plan | | The Darebin Best Start Partnership has an Annual Action Plan containing 21 projects that focuses on the following strategies.
Strategy 1 Community Connections Aim: To improve access to universal services for vulnerable groups.
Strategy 2: Parent Support and Engagement Aim: To support the development of neighbourhood cohesion & connectedness in order to achieve child & family friendly communities.
Strategy 3: Education and literacy Aim: To promote parents reading to their children, and to encourage language development through pre-reading and early literacy activities
Strategy 4: Health and Wellbeing Aim: To improve lifestyle choices, health and well being of children | |
| Best Start News | | Small grants Do you have groups of parents of young children who have activities or events they would like to undertake, or who need some resources, funds for a speaker, an outing or something to add stimulus to their activities? You can apply for a Best Start Small Grant. | |
| There will be two funding rounds - applications to be received by 5.00 pm Friday, 27 March 2009 for the first round, and for the second round 5.00 pm Friday, 28 August, 2009.
Information Sessions: There will be two information sessions to discuss how to apply and the selection criteria process. These will occur in the Function Room, Darebin City Council, cnr High and Gower Street, Preston.
Session 1: Monday, 16 March, 2009 1.00 - 2.00 pm
Session 2: Monday, 17 August , 2009 1.00 - 2.00 pm
Calenders Best Start calendars will be distributed to all families for prep and kindergarten students in Darebin in the last week of January and first week of February. The attractive calendar has useful information on key dates as well as a service directory and features images of some of the fantastic Best Start Projects from the 2007-2008 Action Plan
