| MEDIA RELEASE, 14 October 2009
Jean Luc Godard famously once said that a story should have a beginning, middle, and an end, but not necessarily in that order.
Darebin City Council believes that a story is not about length, but about content. So with this in mind, Darebin is encouraging the community to get creative by writing a piece of fiction using SMS. “With more and more people using mobile phones as their main source of communication, SMS has become a valid style of interaction in our modern world,” said Darebin Mayor, Cr Diana Asmar.
“Mobile phones are providing new and unconventional artistic avenues.”
Cr Asmar said stories entered into the competition could be as wild and imaginative as people wish.
“However in the true spirit of SMS communication all stories must be 200 characters or less including spaces and punctuation.”
“Competition winners and selected runners up will have their stories published in the Northcote and Preston Leader and Inscribe Newspaper 2010. Winners will be announced on Friday 20 November at the launch of ‘Inscribe’ arts newspaper.”
Cr Asmar said the competition was designed to promote the message that writing is for everyone and can be a lot of fun.
“I invite everyone to get creative and write a story for the competition.”
Entries close 4:00pm on Friday 13 November. All entries must be submitted via SMS to 0419 750 505. For more information phone 8470 8888 or go to Inscribe SMS Writing Competition.
