Home>Crash on level crossing calls for driver caution
| MEDIA RELEASE, 4 November 2009
Following a level crossing crash on Cramer Street, Preston on Thursday, Acting Mayor, Cr Tim Laurence, implores drivers to take extra caution when approaching level railway crossings.
“The collision at the Cramer Street level crossing is a reminder to all of us how easily serious crashes can happen when due care is not taken.”
“The driver of the vehicle was extremely lucky to walk away from the accident without serious injury and without causing injury to anyone else.”
“Drivers should always pay extra caution when approaching level crossings and look and listen for signals of an approaching train.”
“Drivers should always look for flashing lights on the boom gates, listen for warning bells as well as look in both directions for oncoming trains.”
“As the State Government’s railway crossing safety campaign says, ‘Don’t risk it’.”
“Drivers must not ever risk entering the crossing if they cannot make it clearly across the tracks or attempt to beat the boom gates. If a train is approaching it will most likely make impact as it takes 200 metres for a train to stop.”
Darebin Council is currently developing a ‘Safe Travel Strategy’ that aspires to greatly reduce the risk of injury on our roads and pathways by focusing on road users, travel modes and locations that have the most impact on Darebin’s road toll. Further details of the Strategy will be announced early next year.
