Community input invited on Darebin Leisure Strategy  Printer Friendly

MEDIA RELEASE, 4 November 2009

Darebin Council is inviting community input into the development of a Leisure Strategy to guide the planning and direction of sport and recreation in the City over the next 10 years.

Acting Mayor, Cr Tim Laurence, said widespread consultation was planned this month, including a community workshop in Preston on 26 November, to gather public feedback.

“It is important that we consult broadly on this Strategy as people in all age groups and backgrounds are involved in leisure activities in one form or another,” he said.

Council’s community consultation during November will include:
• A survey of all schools in Darebin;
• A survey of the 250 sporting and recreation clubs in the City;
• Workshops for specific target groups;
• A general community workshop; and
• A telephone survey of 600 Darebin residents.

“Once we have gathered this community feedback we will use this information plus the results of a review of Darebin’s existing strategies covering sport and recreation and our research into general trends to produce an Issues Paper early next year,” Cr Laurence said.

The Acting Mayor said the new Leisure Strategy would replace Council’s current Leisure Plan and Sport in the North Strategy adopted in 1999. These two strategies have been the major planning tool used to provide sport and recreation in the municipality for the past 10 years.

“We believe there have been significant changes in sport and recreation over the past 10 years so it is important that our new Strategy reflects current trends and meets the sport and recreation needs of all Darebin residents,” he said.

“For example walking has increasingly become a popular form of recreation for our residents so it is important that this Strategy meets the needs of this group of people.”

Cr Laurence said whilst it was important to talk to clubs and organisations, Council wanted to hear from the general Darebin community about how they would like to see Council plan for their leisure needs.

“I encourage people in the community to attend a workshop at Preston Shire Hall, 286 Gower Street, Preston on Thursday 26 November at 7pm to provide us with their feedback,” he said.
