Pet Permits and Registration

Pet Registration

Dogs and cats over the age of 3 months must be registered with Council. Registration renewals are due by 10 April each year. Registering your dog or cat greatly improves their chances of being returned if they become lost.

Your Pet Registration Includes

  • A new registration tag supplied each year for each animal to ensure it can be identified by Council officers or the public so your pet can quickly be returned to you if it becomes lost
  • A 24/7 emergency collection service
  • A pound service that is currently run by the Lost Dogs Home. If your animal is currently registered and wearing it's Council registration tag, you will be contacted as soon as possible to collect your pet
  • A program to subsidise the de-sexing of pets living in Darebin and regular discounted microchipping days
  • Part of the registration fee includes the State Government Levy (cats - $2 and dogs - $3.50) which is used to help provide education program’s for schools and preschools as well as adults. The levy is also used to fund State Government research into dog and cat welfare and control issues
  • 1 free pet registration per household for pensioners (the cheaper pet will receive the free registration where there are multiple pets per household).

    Pet Permits

    There is limit to how many pets you can keep on your property.

    You will need a permit to keep more than two dogs and/or two cats, fowls, rodents, reptiles and subject to approval any other animal.

    Pet owners must keep their pet area secure, clean and free from odours. Animals and birds must have adequate water and food and must not impinge of the surrounding community.

    Council Rangers' Role in the Community

  • Investigate any complaints received in relation to barking dogs, dog attacks, dog scares, cat trespass issues and unowned cats
  • Monitor and enforce the regulations regarding dangerous, menacing and restricted breed dogs in Municipality
  • Monitor and enforce the regulations regarding pet shops, boarding kennels, catteries, pounds, shelter’s, pet breeding establishments and training businesses
  • Provide education to encourage dog owners to pick up dog faeces in public places, to prevent dog attacks in the home and in public areas and education on how to be a responsible pet owner
  • Patrol the on and off lead parks in Darebin to ensure dog owners comply with the requirement of these areas and to allow other park users to enjoy the park
