The 53 square kilometres that make up the City of Darebin stretch from Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs of Northcote and Fairfield out to the traditional middle ring suburbs of Reservoir and Bundoora. With over 55,000 properties, including 55,253 residences and 4,727 commercial/industrial properties, Darebin is among the largest, most diverse communities anywhere in the State.

Housing prices across Darebin have risen dramatically across the last decade, with the southern parts of the municipality experiencing the most rapid growth. With median property prices for December 2003 ranging from $284,250 in Bundoora to $513,750 in Alphington, much of Darebin’s property market is out of reach of families, even with two average wage earners.

Bordered by the Darebin and Merri Creeks, the City of Darebin contains a diverse range of open spaces, ranging from small, local parks up to major regional parklands such as the All Nations Park in Northcote and Bundoora Park in Bundoora. Added to this are environmentally sensitive areas such as the Central Creek Grasslands, the Wildlife reserve at La Trobe University and the Leamington Street Wetlands.

The City of Darebin has assets totalling over $659 Million

In addition to cash and investments, the City of Darebin owns, controls, manages or maintains an extensive range of physical assets. These include over 600kms of roads, 2,000kms of drains, 300 buildings, 450 hectares of parkland and over 45,000 street trees. In 2002-2003, depreciation alone ran to a total cost of over $15 Million.
