McDonell Park (pronounced Mac-Don-nell)is a large neighbourhood sporting reserve located adjacent to Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

The park is bordered by mature eucalyptus trees. A childcare centre is located at the edge of the park with plenty of open space surrounding the park.

Activities

McDonell Park provides a relaxed atmosphere for recreation such as dog walking.
Sporting facilities at the park consist of two football/cricket fields with a pavilion, and a tennis complex consisting of 8 tennis courts.

History

Angus McDonell served as a Northcote councillor in 1912-1918 and as mayor from 1920-1923. In 1922 Northcote Council paid 4,250 pounds to buy 21 acres of swampy land to make a park in Victoria Road and named it after Angus. Angus McDonell claimed to be the first person in Australia to be elected to a municipal council.
