Rates - Frequently Asked Questions

How are my rates used?

Rates are used by Council to pay for local services including garbage collection, street lighting, street cleaning, parks, libraries, local roads, footpaths, drains, emergency services, home and community care services.

How can I receive my Rate Notice?

Rate Notices are sent via Australia Post.

If you would prefer to receive your rates notices via email please visit Request Rate Notice via eMail to register your details.

You will receive a confirmation email advising that future Rate Notices will be sent electronically.

If I have not received my rate notice, can I get a copy?

Please contact Council on (03) 8470 8888 to confirm your mailing address and ownership details. Once all details have been confirmed you may be able to request the notice be re-issued.

When are my rates due?

Rates are required to be paid in four instalments on or before the following dates:

Instalment 1: 30 September
Instalment 2: 30 November
Instalment 3: 28 February
Instalment 4: 31 May

Will I be charged interest if my rates aren’t paid on time?

Yes, instalments not paid on or before the due dates will be charged interest from the due date of that instalment and will continue to accumulate interest until paid.

The interest rate charged on all overdue rates and charges is fixed by the State Government of Victoria.

How can I pay my rates?

All ratepayers have the following payment options, using cash, cheque, credit or debit card:

  • Over the phone on: 1300 954 297
  • Via the internet: Payments Online
  • At any Australia Post Branch
  • By mail
  • In person at any Darebin Customer Service Centre.
  • Council also offers Direct Debit by either four Instalments or 10 monthly Instalments. For further information regarding Direct Debit visit Rating Process

Am I eligible for a rates concession (discount)?

If you hold a current Pension Concession Card, DVA (Department of Veteran’s Affairs) Gold Repatriation Health Card – TPI (Totally or Permanently Incapacitated) or DVA Gold Repatriation Health Card – War Widow, and live at the property shown on the Rate Notice, you may be eligible for a rebate.

If you are eligible, and previously made an application, you will automatically receive a rebate each year. If a rebate does not show, or you have not made an application, please bring your Rate Notice and concession card to a Darebin Customer Service Centre to make the necessary adjustments.

Please note Health Care Card holders are not eligible for this concession.

How can I change my address and contact details for my Rate Notice?

If you have changed your address please visit Change of Address, complete the online form and submit. Your details will then be updated.

Alternatively, your request can be put in writing in any language and mailed to:
