Naturestrips and Street Trees

Most residents will have a Naturestrip which is the land between the road-side kerb and footpath or property boundary. This land will often contain a Street Tree and services such as water and gas. Council has developed a policy to guide management of Naturestrips, Street Trees and other Trees within Darebin which is included below.

Streetscape Strategy

City of Darebin is committed to keeping community members informed about tree planting near their residence or business. As such, owners and occupiers of Darebin properties will be involved in the process of streetscape design.

Naturestrips

Council is happy to work with residents who wish to replace existing grass naturestrips with plantings. A Naturestrip Planting Policy has been established to guide naturestrip planting. See below.

You will be required to fill out an Naturestrip Planting Application form which can be returned to any Darebin Customer Service Centre.

You will be contacted to confirm if your application has been successful.

Tree Retention Policy

Darebin is a well-developed urban municipality and trees play an important role in defining its character. Council and the community value Darebin's trees for their social, economic, environmental and aesthetic importance.

Council has developed a Tree Retention Policy which provides guidelines for decision making in relation to the management of park, street and protected trees within the City of Darebin. The Tree Retention Policy can be downloaded below.

Street Trees

Individual tree planting occurs every year. Residents who require a tree for their naturestrip should contact Customer Service.

If you are enquiring about the maintenance of street trees or tree maintenance in parks you should also contact Customer Service.

Water Restrictions

Under the Yarra Valley Water Drought Response Plan, street tree watering with a mobile watertanker has exemption under every stage of water restrictions. Darebin has obtained the relevant exemption to continue the program.

Residents are encouraged to water newly planted street trees in accordance with current restrictions.

Mature drought tolerant trees should not require additional water unless during times of extreme drought in which case residents are advised to use grey water.

Visit the Water Restrictions page for more details.
