Australia Day Award nominations open

MEDIA RELEASE, 2 September 2010

“It’s all about celebrating people who truly ‘put back into the community’,” says Darebin Councillor and Australia Day Committee Representative, Councillor Ben Morgan.

Darebin Council is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Darebin Australia Day Awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year.

“The Darebin Australia Day Awards is Council’s way of recognising those behind-the-scenes heroes - the people who go that extra mile to make life more enjoyable for others,” Cr Morgan said.

“The twist is that often the people who put in the most effort shy away from the limelight. They don’t do it to seek recognition; they do it simply because they care.

“But it’s important to recognise their contribution, not only to say ‘thank you’, but also to inspire others to do their bit. If you know a person or group who have made a wonderful contribution to the community, now is the time to nominate them,” said Cr Morgan.

The Awards will be presented at a special lunch event on Australia Day, 26 January 2011. A large citizenship ceremony will also be held as part of the celebrations. Nominations close on Friday 10 December 2010.
