Cooking classes, yoga and taekwondo are just some of the events coming up at the Darebin Intercultural Centre over the coming month. These events are designed for a diverse range of people so they can meet, interact, have fun, learn and grow in a safe and respectful environment.
Tuesdays and Sundays in May, 6pm – 7.30pm
Taekwondo, ages 4 and up
$50 per child per month
Taekwondo is a form of self-defence and is considered to be a form of exercise, meditation and philosophy.
Tuesdays and Thursdays in May, 6.30pm – 7.30pm (Tues), 7.30pm – 8.30pm (Thurs)
Yoga
$140 for a 10 week course or $15 per class for casual attendance (cash only)
Classes will be taught by Christine Cook. Wear loose comfortable clothes and bring your own yoga mat or large towel.

An interactive evening with group discussions on culture and film. The film will provide a great insight into the Macedonian culture.

Human Rights: Is it a European Construct or Universal Value?

Explore the proposition that Asian and Non-European traditions radically transformed human rights.

Asian-Style Food Preserving Workshop with Charlie Si

Communication Across Cultures: Intercultural Exchange

This event is part of a series of workshops that aim to provide a deeper understanding of communication styles from the Darebin community in a wide range of settings.

Traditional African Cooking Demonstration

Experience the taste of Africa with this fun demonstration.

Vitamin D Deficiency – What are the health concerns?

Professor Peter Robert Ebeling from the University of Melbourne will speak about this increasing health issue. The forum will provide ample opportunity for participants to learn and ask questions.

Fruit Preserving Workshop
Free
Emenuel and Luigi Pomealli demonstrate how to preserve fruit using a minimum of sugar. Part of the Darebin Backyard Harvest Festival, and a Darebin Homemade Food & Wine Festival event.
21 May, 6pm – 8.30pm
Iraqi Home-style Cooking
$10, includes dinner
This cooking class will focus on cooking authentic Iraqi dishes. The class is hands-on, interactive and lots of fun with lots to eat.
22 May, 6pm – 8pm
Roots of Life Cooking Classes
$10 per class, includes dinner
These classes will be conducted by renowned Chef, Maestro and Composer, Mr Fouad Haraka. Participants will learn a range of culinary dishes, accompanied by violin performances.

Industry Seminar for Darebin Skilled Migrants
Free, includes morning tea and lunch
Learn how to gain employment in your profession, receive advice and information on how to put your skills to use as quickly as possible.

Human Rights Movie Series
Free, includes afternoon tea
This even is part of a series of monthly films covering themes relating to global and local human rights issues. The screening includes a community discussion with an exchange of views and thoughts about the film and related human rights issues.

Amer Rashad, Iraqi Artist – exhibition launch
Free, includes dinner
Amer Rashad is an Iraqi artist, now settled in Darebin, who fled his home country to preserve his artistic freedom.
28 May, 6pm – 8.30pm
Assyrian Home-Style Cooking
$10, includes dinner
This cooking class will focus on cooking authentic Assyrian dishes. The class is hands-on, interactive and lots of fun with lots to eat.
31 May, 12pm – 1.30pm
Lebanese Community Profile
Free, includes Lebanese lunch
This session aims to raise Darebin workers cultural awareness of the community migration and settlement experience of the Lebanese community, and provide strategies to work with the community.
