Street Parties  Printer Friendly

Street parties are a fun, social way to get to know your neighbours and make your street a safer place to live.

The City of Darebin, in collaboration with the Darebin Neighbourhood House Network, encourages communities to host street parties through offering incentives and resources to help plan a fun and successful street party.

The Meet the Street - Street Party Guide, available for download below, provides tips and information on how to get your party started.

Getting Started
Speak to your neighbours
Chat to your neighbours about your plans to get them interested and involved.

Choose a Location
The City of Darebin has over 130 parks and reserves that would be ideal for a party. Visit Parks and Reserves to find one suitable for you. Other alternatives could be a driveway, front lawn or shared space.

Food
A barbecue is a great way to bring people together. SPAN Community House has light, portable barbecues available for hire. Visit the Parks and Reserves page to find out which parks have barbeque facilities.

If you plan to sell food and drinks, it is necessary to obtain a permit. You must complete the Temporary Food Stall Permit at least three weeks prior to the event. Visit the Food Stalls page for details.

Insurance
To ensure there are no legal issues with organising your event, it is important to obtain Public Liability Insurance. You can register with the Darebin Neighbourhood House Network to arrange free Public Liability Insurance for your event.

There are many other great resources available from the Darebin Neighbourhood House to help with your next neighourhood party including:

  • portable barbecue
  • invitations
  • public liability insurance

Permits, Road Closures and Insurance
If your street party/parade will require road closure or you will be selling food, you are required to apply for a permit.

If you require a road to be closed for your street party, please complete the application form below to request a road closure. This form must be completed and returned four weeks before your party and requires a public liability insurance number.

For information on selling food, visit the Food Stalls page.

The Darebin Neighbourhood House Network provides Public Liability Insurance for Darebin residents hosting a Street Party. Contact Customer Service on 8470 8888 for more information.
