Walking School Bus  Printer Friendly

The Walking School Bus is a fun and exciting way to encourage children to walk to school. The program sees small groups of children walk to school led by an adult volunteer, either as a 'driver' in front or a 'conductor' at the rear of the bus . The buses walk along defined, Council audited routes, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way.

Why a Walking School Bus?
Darebin has the fourth highest number of pedestrian injuries across Victorian local government areas, with child pedestrians (aged 5 to 12 years) being one of the most vulnerable pedestrian groups. Worse, Darebin has the second highest number of pedestrian fatalities, behind only metropolitan Melbourne.

The Walking School Bus program provides a great opportunity to educate children about road safety and a safe environment for walking to school.

Get Involved
There are currently five school involved in the Walking School Bus program.

  • Northcote Primary School (three active buses)

  • St Joseph's Primary School (three active buses)

  • Wales St Primary School (one active bus)

  • Westgarth Primary School (one active bus)

  • Holy Name Primary School (three active buses)

Walk Once a Week (WOW) Program

The Walk Once a Week program encourages children to walk to school at least once a week. This program is ideal for schools and can be more flexible than the Walking School Bus Program.

Teachers mark off on a chart in their classroom when a child walked to school on a particular day of the week . At the end of term, students and teachers email their results to the Walking School Bus Coordinator. Rewards are given to those who participated based on the number of times they walked to school during the term.

To register your interest in either the Walking School Bus Program or the WOW program please contact the Walking School Bus Coordinator.
