Economic and Employment Profile  Printer Friendly

Darebin is a well established northern Melbourne metropolitan municipality. The southern end, including the suburbs of Fairfield and Northcote, is just 10 minutes from Melbourne CBD, while the northern end is 20 minutes from Melbourne’s International Airport.

Darebin is well serviced by public transport, with two rail lines, tram lines and numerous bus routes. These transport services provide easy access to our amenities and education institutions and to those beyond the boundaries of Darebin such as RMIT University in the CBD and Bundoora.

The City has major north south road linkages along St. George’s Road, High Street and Plenty Road and the main east west link is along Bell Street. Darebin is adjacent to the Metropolitan Ring Road, Eastlink and Citylink, providing access to all ports, the City and western, eastern and south eastern suburbs.

    Darebin Housing and Population Growth
Darebin provides a wide diversity of housing, from modern apartments in the heart of some very trendy strips to traditional Californian Bungalows and Victorian residences. Darebin has gentrified over the last 10 – 15 years with people moving in and renovating older family style homes on traditional, large residential blocks, close to the City.

Housing prices across Darebin have increased in the last decade, with the southern parts of the municipality experiencing the most rapid growth.

The median property prices for December 2008 range from $400,000 in Bundoora and $547,500 in Thornbury to $847,500 in Alphington.

Further north are the contemporary suburbs of Springthorpe and Gresswell Grange, offering modern homes, close to La Trobe University. Darebin’s neighbouring municipalities offer a further diversity of housing stock and lifestyle, with places like Nillumbik providing country style living only 15 minutes from the suburbs and inner city.
