Retail Industry
The Darebin 2007 Household Survey revealed that daily shopping needs of residents are generally met by the shopping centre closest to either their home or work or the journey between these.

The Preston Market has increased its share of the daily shopping market in Darebin from 15.7% in 1999 to 22.9% in 2007. A similar increase was also experienced in Edwardes Street, Reservoir.

Grocery shopping needs are mostly met by Preston Market (41.5%) followed by Northcote Plaza (31.3%), Northland Shopping Centre (22.6%), Victoria Market (11.9%) and Fairfield Shopping Centre (11.4%).

Most clothing and comparison goods shopping is done at Northland Shopping Centre (64.2%) and 23.3% is done in Melbourne CBD.

Larger household goods shopping is generally done at Northland Shopping Centre (37.8%) and Northland Homemaker Centre (37.4%) with Melbourne CBD also being used (9.2%).

For dining out and entertainment, survey results have remained stable over the last six years with the centre most commonly visited by residents is Lygon Street Carlton (23.2%) followed by Brunswick Street Fitzroy (21.1%) and Melbourne CBD (20.6%). Both High Street Northcote (16.5% in 2007 up from 11.3% in 2003) and High Street Westgarth (14.3% in 2007 up from 10.3% in 2003) continue to increase patronage.

One of the biggest threats to Darebin’s retail and entertainment industries would seem to be Darebin’s close proximity to Melbourne CBD. Grocery shopping at the Victoria Market (11.9%), clothing and comparison goods (23.3%) in Melbourne CBD as well as larger household goods (9.2%), dining out in Carlton, Fitzroy and Melbourne (64.9%).

Darebin’s traditional retail strip centres in Fairfield, Northcote, Preston and Reservoir provides an eclectic mix of cafes, restaurants, art galleries, live entertainment venues and retail specialty stores.
