Community Awards

You can nominate an individual or group for one of the five categories of awards.

The 2018 Awards are made up of five categories:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Leader of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year 
  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Emerging young Community Leader of the Year
  • Community Group of the Year

How to Nominate a person or group:

Nominations open Thursday 1 February 2018 and close 4pm, Tuesday 31 July 2018.

  1. Complete a separate Nomination Form for each nomination.
  2. Ensure you complete all sections of the nomination form and attach copies of any supporting information, e.g. previous awards
    won, newspaper or magazine articles, details of additional referees, etc.
  3. Lodge your Nomination Form - forms can be lodged via email, post or in-person at any Darebin Customer Service Centre.

All nominees and nominators will be invited to the Darebin Community Awards Night which will be held on Friday, 24 August 2018 at Preston City Hall.

Eligibility Criteria by category

Citizen of the Year
Presented to an individual over 21 years of age. The nominee must be an Australian Citizen, who either lives, works, volunteers or studies in the City of Darebin, and who has made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Leader of the Year
Presented to an individual who symbolises the values important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and is an inspirational leader and a role model for others. The nominee will have made significant impact in the Darebin community, through professional or voluntary undertakings, over a number of years.

Young Citizen of the Year (under 21 years)
Presented to an individual up to 21 years of age. The nominee must be an Australian Citizen, who either lives, works, volunteers’ or studies in the City of Darebin, and who has made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Emerging YOUNG Community Leader of the Year (under 21 years)
Presented to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person up to the age of 21. The nominee will have made an outstanding contribution to their community and or demonstrated excellence in their chosen field, and is regarded as an inspirational role model for other members of the community.

Community Group of the Year
A Community Group of four or more people who have performed a service to the community. This award targets voluntary groups with minimal funding – large funded organisations are excluded. The contribution can occur in the year prior to the award being presented or as recognition of a longstanding commitment/service to the community.

Nominations for each award are judged by the Darebin Community Awards Committee.

Overall Judging Criteria
Judging is based on the following overall criteria:

  1. Desire for prosperity with a share for all
  2. Contribution to the cultural diversity of the community
  3. Community values and support systems
  4. Equality and equity
  5. Practices ethical behaviour
  6. Concern for sustainability and the environment.

Additional Category Judging Criteria

Citizen of the Year
and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Leader of the Year

  • Demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the community
  • Undertakes activities that have short and long term benefits for others
  • Provides a positive role model for others
  • Takes the lead and shows vision
  • Undertakes activities that promote the welfare and wellbeing of the community
  • Contributions made by nominee have either been done on a voluntary basis or exceed the normal requirements of the person’s paid work.

Young Citizen of the Year
and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Emerging Young Leader of the Year

  • Participates in the community
  • Active in youth issues
  • Is caring, compassionate and sharing
  • Shows vision
  • Takes the lead
  • Positive role model to peers
  • Accepts responsibility for self and others
  • Shows outstanding achievement in either academic, sporting, cultural, environment or civic life.

Community Group of the Year

  • Role and achievement of the group
  • Service to the community
  • Significant volunteer involvement
  • Target community of the group nominated
  • Benefits to target community and how they are measured and evaluated
  • How does the group’s role and achievements reflect the values of Darebin Community Awards as set out above?
