Darebin is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing the issue of climate change.
Darebin won the Achievement in Sustainability (urban and larger councils category) in the national Environs Australia Awards for Climate Change Action for the programs and actions undertaken by Council to achieve this commitment.
Below are the actions and programs.

| Climate Change Action Plan | | Darebin's Climate Change Action Plan 2007 - 2009 won the Local Government Professionals Award for Excellence in the Sustainability Initiative category.
Greenhouse emissions from Council operations reduced by 16% in 2007/2008 compared to the previous year.
Darebin is now purchasing 100% GreenPower, government accredited renewable energy, for all of Council's owned and managed buildings. This means we have achieved our 2010 reduction target one year early.
The Climate Change Action Plan also sets a Carbon Neutral target for Council operations by 2020 - to end our contribution to Climate Change.
This will be done by:
| |
 | Expanding Council’s energy efficiency program | | Designing new facilities for carbon neutrality | | Pursuing the changeover to energy efficient street lights | | Reviewing the vehicle fleet |
|
|
Community Climate Change Action Plan | | Darebin has developed a Community Climate Change Action Plan to explore ways we can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in households, businesses, organisations and industries.
Development of the plan included: | |
 | A community consultation process | | Setting a greenhouse reduction target | | Reviewing our existing programs |
|
|
Climate Change and Peak Oil Adaptation Plan | | Darebin Council is also developing an Adaptation Plan to prepare for the impacts of Climate Change and Peak Oil.
The Plan aims to minimise and adapt to the risks of climate change and peak oil, such as extreme weather, scarcity and cost increases of water, fuel and related products. The plan proposes over 100 actions for Council operations and our community support services.
Download the Draft Strategy from the Adaptation Plan webpage or view it at any of our Libraries or Customer Service Centres.

| Advocacy and Submissions | | Darebin's Submission to the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Amendment Bill including the need for a gross solar feed in tariff. | |
| Darebin's Submission to the National Carbon Offset Discussion Paper including the need for consideration of voluntary actions and GreenPower. | |
| Darebin's Submission to the Victorian Government Climate Change Green Paper including the role of local government, the priority actions and appropriate consultation. | |
Other Programs | | Darebin is working with the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action to coordinate greenhouse reduction projects. The alliance is made of up nine northern region Council’s and the Moreland Energy Foundation.
