Maternal and Child Health

Maternal and Child Health Nurses are registered general nurses, with post graduate qualifications in both midwifery and child health. The Maternal and Child Health service is free and strict confidentiality is maintained.

The nurses provide health advice and support for parents of children up to 6 years old.

Education sessions are available for new parents.

Services Available

  • Monitor your child's health and well being by regular screening and assessment
  • Assist in breastfeeding and/or other feeding issues and offer Lactation Consultant support if required by referral
  • Provide information regarding your child's immunisation program
  • Discuss parental health issues as they arise, i.e. post-natal depression, family planning and any other parental health concerns
  • Provide guidance and education on childhood illnesses, child safety, use of car restraints and other child hood issues
  • Link families into local services and agencies, i.e. Child Care Centres
  • Provide telephone or on-site interpreters as well as link families into services specifically for Non-English speaking families
  • First Mothers Groups
  • Provide counselling and emotional support to families.

Enhanced Maternal & Child Health

Provides intensive outreach support for families experiencing difficulties in caring for children, high risk families and families in crisis.

Services provided include:

  • Practical information and support
  • Developmental screening and guidance
  • Counselling on parenting issues
  • Opportunistic immunisations
  • Women's health issues
  • Information and referral to other services

First Aid Session For Parents with Babies Under 1 Year

Darebin Maternal and Child Health in conjunction with New Generation First Aid would like to offer a First Aid Course for Parents- The Early Years. The Course covers CPR, choking, burns and breathing problems.
