How to Save Energy

  • Install insulation and seal all draughts and unnecessary vents
  • Wear warm clothes and heat only those areas you need
  • Set your heater thermostat between 18 to 21 degrees
  • Avoid air-conditioning - use a fan instead
  • Install a 3 star or higher showerhead and take shorter showers
  • Consider installing a solar hot water system
  • Choose energy efficient appliances when shopping
  • Wash clothes in cold water
  • Only wash clothes and dishes when you have a full load
  • Use the washing line, not the clothes dryer
  • Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Avoid energy intensive halogen downlights
  • Turn off appliances at the wall

    Tips for Home Builders and Renovators

  • Incorporate north facing windows, blinds, verandas and ceiling fans to help control temperature
  • Install a solar hot water system
  • Choose a gas heater with at least a 4-star energy rating
  • Install or upgrade insulation

  • 'Talking My Language' Multicultural 'Saving Energy' Resources

    The Darebin 'Talking My Language' program works in partnership with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communites across Darebin and beyond, to develop good quality, culturally relevant, energy efficiency information in community languages.

    The groups we have partnered with have included:

    • The Reservior Greek Elderly Citizens club - producing a booklet;
    • The Macedonian Bigla Senior Citizens Group - producing a booklet;
    • The Goulburn Valley Afghan Association in Shepparton - producing a dvd;
    • The Australian Vietnamese Womens Association in Richmond - producing a set of fridge magnets;
    • Parents and Children from Footscray North Primary School - producing a dvd;
    • The Northcote Italian Pensioners Club - producing a magnetised flip chart.

    Tips for Reducing Greenhouse Emissions

    • Use public transport, cycle or walk instead of driving
    • Buy locally produced food or grow your own
    • Choose products carefully. Avoid disposable products or those that have traveled a long distance
