Gaming

Council is currently reviewing its Electronic Gaming Policy. The Community Engagement Process will commence in February. A survey will be available on this website for you to provide feedback. Updates on the results and the development of the new policy will be posted here. The new policy will be completed by June 2014.

In July 2011, the City of Darebin had the following gaming profile:

• Total Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) or losses of over $89
million during 2010- 2011
• 986 EGMs in 14 venues (8 hotels and 6 clubs)
• EGM density of 8.7 EGMs per 1,000 adults. This is higher than the
metropolitan Melbourne average of 6.1 and the State average of 6.3
• Annual EGM expenditure of $787, well above the metropolitan Melbourne
average of $658

The Darebin Electronic Gaming Machine Policy and Strategic Action Plan 2010-2014 was adopted in August 2010. The Policy articulates Council's position on gaming in Darebin and is orientated towards harm reduction measures at the local level. The scope of this policy provides Council with a clear position in relation to:

  • Council policy on EGM gambling
  • Community benefit
  • Council as responsible planning authority
  • Council-owned or managed property or land
  • Venue applications and permits
  • Gaming Alternatives

About the Life’s a Gamble project

Life’s a Gamble is an innovative community theatre project supported by the City of Darebin, City of Moreland, Gambler’s Help Northern and Latrobe University. The project involves young people and international students in a series of theatre workshops to explore themes around gambling and young people. The workshops draw on the personal stories of the young people themselves and culminate in a final theatre performance.

A pilot of the Life’s a Gamble project took place in early 2012 with a final performance held as part of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week in May 2012. Audio samples of this final performance are provided below.
