Tram Route 86 Corridor Project

The Tram Route 86 improvements project will enhance accessibility to Melbourne’s tram network and make it safer to get on and off Route 86 trams by separating passengers and traffic.

The new stops are at Stop 31 (Northcote Town Hall) and Stop 32 (Mitchell Street).

The stops have a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists between the passenger waiting area and trams. Cyclists are required to stop behind the tram when it stops to allow passengers to get on and off the tram safely.

The project is a great example of how Yarra Trams, VicRoads and local councils can work together to deliver a better tram network and better streets for local communities.

Update on Westgarth & Northcote accessible tram stop construction

New Stops in Northcote

Northcote's two new pairs of kerb extension tram stops opened on Monday 20 February 2012 and include a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists travelling along High Street.
Westgarth's new central island platform stops opened on 23 January 2012 and are the first of their kind in Melbourne.

It is important that pedestrians, cyclists and drivers know how to use this new environment safely and that everyone shares the road with care.

During the week of the opening of the new Northcote stops, an education campaign including The Yellow Men helped show people how to use the stops and the shared path.

How to use the new tram stops & shared path

Rules and common courtesy need to be observed when using the new shared paths and tram stops. Cyclists, passengers and shoppers need to watch out for each other.

Cyclists

  • give way to pedestrians on the shared path at all times

  • slow down and use your bell to alert people on the path

  • stop behind a tram when it is stopped at the tram stop while passengers get on and off trams
  • Passengers/Pedestrians

  • wait for trams behind the shared path

  • watch for cyclists when getting on or off trams

  • cross the road only at the safe crossing points at each of the new stops and not between the platofrms

  • when at cafes adjacent to a shared path, keep dogs away from the pathway where cyclists may be riding
  • Drivers

  • stop and wait behind the tram when it is stopped at the tram stop

  • reduce your speed to no more than 40km/hour between 8am and midnight through High Street

  • check the parking signs - there are parking changes near the new stops

  • watch for pedestrians who may not be crossing at the pedestrian crossings

    Background

Tram Route 86 runs along High Street and Plenty Road through the City of Darebin.

This project covers a 6.8 kilometre corridor reaching from Westgarth Street in Westgarth up to Albert Street in Reservoir. It involves upgrading tram stops and making major changes to the road environment to make tram travel along this route quicker and easier.

It also aims to give pedestrians more priority in key strip shopping and activity centres, improving pedestrian safety and mobility, and visual amenity to make the area more vibrant and attractive.

Council adopts the Tram Route 86 proposal

In early 2009 the Darebin community provided feedback on an initial proposal. Another eight week consultation period concluded late 2009.

On Monday 21 December Darebin City Council adopted the Tram Route 86 Corridor Improvement Project with some amendments. This followed a comprehensive consultation process with the community.

The Minutes of the meeting are available from the Council Meeting Minutes December 2009 and detail the resolution made by Councillors.

A Community Consultation Report was prepared to provide feedback to Councillors and the community following the extensive consultation process. The Report is available below and includes many pages of appendices, however a summary report is also available.

If you require a hardcopy version, please contact Transport Management & Planning on the details below.
