Get Active in Darebin Program - Summer 2024
Get Active in Darebin is a free community-based exercise program aimed at increasing the physical activity and wellbeing levels of Darebin residents. Program also targets engaging under-represented groups into physical activity.
Most activities are catered for people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels, and facilitated by qualified instructors and coaches. Many programs include family friendly classes specifically designed for parents and children to enjoy exercise together.
Registration is required for many sessions, whilst other you can just join in on the day. Bring your own water, towels, and a mat (if required) and join in on the fun.

Program details
Balance & Stability for Older Adults
Starts: 15 January - 19 February
Mondays: 9.30am – 10.30am

As part of our Summer 2024 program, Just Believe Fit is offering a series of classes focused on balance and stability. Sessions are ideal for the demands of everyday life and for building confidence and resilience against falls. Each session introduces functional exercises for joint mobility, core stability, co-ordination, proprioception and weight transfer. Chairs and a range of props are used to make this class accessible for different levels of ability. You can do a single class or the whole series. Sessions are not held if it is raining.
When registering you will need to enter "Just Believe Fit" to register for the session. Please contact Marisa on 0402 916 128 if you are having difficulty with the registration process for this session.
Para Badminton

All kids and adults with a disability are welcome to give para badminton a go. Join Arnie and our wheelchair badminton athletes for a friendly hit. All equipment is provided (or you can bring your own). No experience needed.
Come & Try Cardio Tennis

Cardio Tennis is a fun, sociable group fitness class with a tennis twist. This tennis workout is open to adults with all skill levels. It is a great cardio workout with whilst having fun in a small group – what's not to like? You'll get to hit lots of tennis balls during your class, build up your skills and work up a sweat.
Chair Yoga
Starts: 15th January – 19 February

Chair yoga, a gentle form of yoga that's done while seated or using a chair for balance. It is a great way to work your core, explore the different range of motion of the joints and prioritize movement. Chair Yoga will assist in decreasing stress, anxiety, and depression. Registration is not required, just drop in and enjoy!
Virtual Hula Hooping

Join our Virtual Hula Hooping class at Narrandjeri Stadium. Follow the virtual instructor to learn new tricks whilst moving your hips to the music. We provide the equipment so you can just enjoy yourself.
Introduction to Soccer for Women & Gender Diverse People

Were you inspired by the Matildas performance at the World Cup? Or would just like to get some exercise, meet new people and have a great time playing soccer? Sign up for the 6-week summer soccer program for women and gender diverse people run by Darebin Falcons. You'll move your body, learn and practice some soccer skills and unleash your inner Sam Kerr! Players of all ages and abilities are welcome.
Tai Chi
Starts: 16 January – 20 February

Originated in China as a martial art, Tai Chi is a low impact slow motion exercise process. This gentle form of exercise can help maintain strength, flexibility, and balance. Tai chi can be easily adapted for anyone, and you can get started even if you are not in top shape or the best of health. Just drop on as registration is not required.
Soccer Mums

Join the 6 week Go Soccer Mums program organised by Darebin United Soccer Club under our summer program. GO SOCCER Mums is an introductory football program designed specifically for women, where participants can have fun, meet new people, and learn basic football skills in a social, judgement-free environment. No registration required, just drop by to have fun.
Rainbow Pickleball

Members of the LGBTQI+ community and allies are invited to try Pickleball, the NEW racquet sport taking the world by storm. If you enjoy Badminton, Tennis and/ or Table Tennis then you’ll love this. We provide all the equipment you need. So, bring along a friend for a hit or make new friends on court. No experience needed.
Pilates
Starts: 17 January – 21 February
Wednesdays: 9.30am - 10.30am

Pilates is a form of strength training, but it doesn't look like some of the other strength training exercises you might be familiar with. Pilates focuses more on improving muscle tone than building muscles, resulting in greater stability and endurance. Registration is not required, just drop in and enjoy!
Cardio Tennis

Wednesdays: 4pm – 5pm

Join our music-fuelled group workout on court. Cardio Tennis burns calories, increases your fitness, improves your game and most importantly is loads of fun. Hit the court with our resident coach and like-minded people to serve up some groovy moves that’ll be sure to get your heart pumping.
Come-N-Play Tennis

Enjoy daylight savings and test out your skills like the Aus open champions and come n’ try tennis. BYO racquets and balls and have a social hit with family and friends on our outdoor tennis courts.
Table Tennis

Play the beloved backyard game of Table Tennis at Narrandjeri Stadium. Whether you already play it at home and are looking for somewhere to test your skills out against others or you’re looking for a fun, social non-competitive activity to play with friends or even want the opportunity to meet new people, this session has something for everyone. All tables and equipment are provided.
Mini Roos

Join the 6 week Mini Roos program organised by Darebin United Soccer Club under our summer program. MiniRoos uses short, game-based sessions to introduce football, from 4 to 11 year olds, in an inclusive way. It focuses on learning new skills, being active, making life-long friends and unearthing the next generation of Socceroos and Matildas. No registration required, just drop by to have fun.
Body Pump Xpress

Les Mills BODYPUMP - use weights to strengthen, condition & tone the whole body. You will also increase bone density, support a healthy metabolism, and walk out feeling pumped! Registration is not required, sign in at the reception and join in. No session on 26 January.
Meditation

Set-up in a quiet multifunction space, you can begin to let go of daily stressors and challenges and drop yourself into the present moment as you focus on your breathing and find a sense of calmness. Feel free to bring any comforts (mats, pillows, rugs) as you listen to a combination of music and guided visualisations.
Roller Skating

Darebin Community Sports Stadium (DCSS) offers a safe, indoor space, protected from weather for local roller skaters to stay active this Summer. We welcome skaters of all ages and abilities to DCSS where the music will be pumping for some fun freestyle skating. No experience needed. (BYO Skates). Registration is required. No Session on 26 January.
Parkrun

A community event initiated and organised entirely by volunteers where you can walk, jog or run five (5) kilometres. Commences at 8.00am every Saturday morning at CT Barling Reserve in Reservoir.
Body Step

Les Mills BODYSTEP – a full body cardio workout to really tone your butt and thighs. You can expect a mixture of upbeat rhythmic stepping, with squat and lunge patterns to work the legs. Combine this with movements like burpees, push ups and weight plate exercise, and the result is a fun, uplifting, full body workout! Plenty of options – suitable for all levels. Registration is not required, sign in at the reception and join in.
Body Combat

Les Mills BODYCOMBAT is a high-energy martial art inspired non-contact workout with no complex moves to master. Body Combat works your legs, tones your arms, shoulders and provides phenomenal core training. The workout develops coordination, agility and speed. Registration is not required, sign in at the reception and join in.

Walking and running
It's important to try to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, so why not try walking around local Darebin Parks and streets. Get your free Heart Foundation Personal Walking Plan and get moving today.
Find a walking group near you, visit the Heart Foundation website for more information to search via suburb for your closest groups to join.
For those up for more of a jog or run, why not try parkrun. A free and social community event coordinated by volunteers where you can walk, jog or run 5 kilometers. parkrun is held each Saturday at CT Barling Reserve (Plenty Rd) in Reservoir from 8—9am. Find out more about parkrun and register.
Reduced gym membership
If you’re having financial difficulties, you might be able to get a subsidised gym membership. This will give you access to Reservoir Leisure Centre from 6am—4pm.
