Over-dimensional vehicle permits

You'll need an over-dimensional light vehicle permit for any car, truck, boat or vehicle combination that exceeds certain dimensions.

A light vehicle is defined as being less than 4.5 tonnes in gross vehicle mass (GVM).

You'll need an over dimensional light vehicle permit for any car, truck, boat or vehicle combination that exceeds one or more of the following dimensions:

  • 4.3 metres in height
  • 2.5 metres in width
  • 12.5 metres in length for a rigid vehicle
  • 19 metres in length for a combination vehicle

If you're operating an over dimensional heavy vehicle, you'll need mass or dimension exemption permit.

You can apply for a permit on the Oversize light vehicles page on the VicRoads website — look on that page for Class O Overdimensional permit.
