What we do and don't collect

A list of which items can or can't be put out for hard rubbish collection.

Items accepted for recycling

We recycle these items

Please sort these items into four separate piles:

  • scrap metal, including ovens, stoves, washing machines, dryers, BBQs and hot water systems
  • bed mattresses and bases
  • e-waste, such as TVs, computers, laptops, printers, monitors, keyboards, radios, CD and DVD players, hair dryers and power tools
  • a maximum of four car tyres (not 4WD tyres).

Items accepted for landfill

These items go to landfill

Please keep any of the below items in one neat pile:

  • old broken furniture
  • toys and sporting equipment (you can also donate them if they're in good condition)
  • neatly stacked timber of up to 1.5 metres long and a maximum of 12 pieces (no fence palings)
  • up to three rolls of carpet
  • floor lino and vinyl
  • small glass items like drinking glasses, wrapped and placed in a secured box marked glass (we don't collect glass in plastic bags).

Items that will not be collected

We do not accept these items for hard waste collection

We don't collect any of the following items, and fines may apply if you put them out for collection:

  • gas bottles and fire extinguishers (you can also return these to the supplier)
  • liquids such as oils and paints
  • batteries of any type
  • large glass items, e.g. windows, mirrors, shower screens, glass doors
  • light globes and tubes
  • 4WD or truck tyres
  • commercial, industrial or business waste
  • building construction and renovation material

You can take any of the above items to the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre (fees may apply).
