Flood update

Get the latest news on the flood news and water activity and service updates throughout the municipality

What a huge few days it’s been for residents and teams as we all respond to flood waters.

We want to thank everyone for the kindness we’ve seen across the community, helping each-other where you are able, and being understanding and patient with our teams.

We are all thinking of the other areas across Victoria that are heavily affected. While we are lucky in Darebin, we are still seeing flood water and water damage in some areas.

Our priority is your safety, so our teams have been working around the clock from Thursday 13 October to today to respond to:

  • 160 requests for assistance and to report issues
  • After prioritising the most urgent cases, we’ve resolved the 60 most urgent.
  • Our teams continue to assess and respond to the remaining calls.
  • Meanwhile, staff are monitoring creek levels and known hotspots for any risk.
  • They have been clearing paths and debris from the creek lines, and reporting areas that need repair.
  • We know that many garden beds have been stripped of mulch and granitic paths have been washed away

Affected areas

We’re preparing for any further flood waters later this week with weather predicted to turn again.

Fortunately, water levels are dropping in most areas at the moment. But we have supplies, staff and communications on standby if things change.

Key locations

We’ve been keeping a close eye on have been the following areas:

Location Notes
Muriel Court, Reservoir
Merri Creek

The lower bridges in the south of Darebin (Merri Creek) are still submerged and impassable

Brex Bridge in the north is also impassable

All other bridges are safe and accessible

Shared trails Large sections of shared trails are still underwater. Water in low lying sections will take some time to recede.
Northcote Golf Course

Closed due to the flood waters, but water has receded and the greens are in reasonable condition.

We are waiting for a more improvement before the site is open again.

If it's flooded, forget it

We are urging residents and visitors to please stay out of any flooded paths and listen to the warning signs in place. It’s a huge challenge for our staff seeing people moving through dangerous water.

Please listen to the advice we’re hearing from the State Emergency Services: If it’s flooded, forget it.

The clean up will take a number of weeks and we appreciate people’s patience as we undertake works.
