Multicultural services and diversity

Learn about our multicultural services, from translation and interpreting to our dedicated Intercultural Centre.

Darebin is home to people from over 153 countries who speak 148 different languages. About one-third of us were born overseas, and for almost half of us, both parents were born overseas.

Council is committed to ensuring our services and programs meet the needs of our culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) residents. We have an interpreting service for non-English speakers, host a range of regular events from the Darebin Intercultural Centre, and share a list of local organisations and businesses in the Multicultural Directory.

Darebin's original inhabitants are the Wurundjeri people and the municipality is recognised as an important area of Aboriginal history and living culture. Today, Darebin is home to people of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, attributes, orientations and identities. Darebin's community cherishes this diversity, and we are committed to accessibility and inclusion for all.

Darebin's Inclusive Communications Charter is a public statement that reflects this commitment and provides a clear framework for what you can expect from us.
