World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) falls on June 15 each year.

Elder abuse is mistreatment of an older person committed by someone the older person has a relationship of trust with - such as a partner, family member, friend or carer. It may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect.

Elder maltreatment can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences. The main day on 15 June is when we join the world in voicing our opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on older people and celebrate older members of our community.

Beyond Age Project

For 2026, we are organising the Beyond Age Project(PDF, 2MB) in collaboration with Seniors Rights Victoria

Beyond Age is a creative storytelling and portrait project, celebrating life experience, reflection, and resilience.

As part of this project, we are seeking participants aged 50+ who live in the City of Darebin to:

  • share a photograph of themselves as a young adult (ages 20–50)
  • attend a 1-hour workshop on Ageing and Ageism in March 2026
  • take part in a new photographic portrait session.

These elements will come together to create Beyond Age Storyboards that will be:

  • launched during World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in June 2026
  • exhibited as part of FUSE Festival 2026 at Darebin Libraries.

If you are interested in participating in this project, please complete the Expression of Interest form online, or call 8470 8063 or 8470 8114 or email olderandactive@darebin.vic.gov.au

Expressions of Interest has been extended until Wednesday 25 February 2026.
