How the recruitment process works

When you apply for a job with us, we run an objective and comprehensive selection process. Appointment to Council positions is based on merit.

Each job advertisement has a position description attached. Please read the position description carefully, as it describes the requirements, duties and conditions of the role.

Your application is the first step of the selection process. It gives the selection panel relevant information about your experience, work history and skills. Although it will never solely decide if you’re successful, it offers important information about you and your suitability for the role.

You’ll find the key selection criteria in the position description. We may ask you to address these in your application or a separate document. Your responses will influence our shortlisting process and we recommend you use actual examples.

If you don’t address the key selection criteria when we ask you to, you risk not being considered. If we didn’t ask you to address the key selection criteria, you can still give responses if you want to.

We may contact you for a phone interview or initial discussion to help us decide who we shortlist for an interview.

If we shortlist you for an interview, you’ll have the chance to show us your skills and experience. Our selection panel will ask behavioural questions based on the selection criteria, and you can draw on your experience to show how you meet the requirements of the role.

We may ask you to provide your Working with Children Check, licences, and qualifications at this time. You can also bring any documents and work examples that could help you.

Functional capacity assessment and health declarations

We’ll contact you by phone if we need you to do a functional capacity assessment. You’ll attend the assessment at our expense and with our doctors.

If we don’t need you to do a functional capacity assessment, we’ll ask you to complete a health declaration form.

Psychometric assessment

We may ask you to do a psychometric assessment before your appointment. This aims to determine your cognitive and behavioural fit for the role and the organisation.

Pre-employment check

You’ll need to complete a pre-employment check before being appointed. This may include a:

• Reference check
• National Criminal History Check (Police Check)*
• Working with Children Check
• VEVO/Work Right Check

*A disclosable outcome on a Police Check result does not automatically preclude you from employment with Darebin City Council. We encourage you to apply and please let us know if you have any concerns about the Police Check.

We will let you know via email if you were not shortlisted for an interview.
