What is a circular economy?

The circular economy is a system where materials never become waste and nature is regenerated. Products and materials are kept in circulation through processes like:

  • maintenance
  • reuse
  • refurbishment
  • remanufacture
  • recycling, and composting.

This approach reduces emissions, cuts waste and pollution, and protects biodiversity by reducing our reliance on finite resources.

Sustainability Victoria estimates that 36% of emissions come from extraction and use of materials. This means shifting to a circular economy creates a major opportunity to reduce our environmental impact. While product design plays a big role, everyone has a part to play through everyday choices.
