Go circular for households

Going circular starts by rethinking the way we buy, use and dispose of things. Follow the steps below to be part of the circular economy.

How you can go circular in your home

Before you buy something new, ask yourself:

Do I really need it?

Buying less, whether it’s new or secondhand, reduces our environmental impacts.

Can I borrow or hire it?

Consider:

  • Libraries for books, DVDs, home energy efficiency kits, and induction cooktop
  • Toy libraries for children’s toys to suit different age groups, and Party Kits
  • Equipment hire services
  • Dress hire services.

Can I repair what I already have?

Can you repair it yourself, or get some help?

Does it have to be new?

There are many ways to get secondhand items cheaply, or even free. Check out our pre-loved clothing trail(PDF, 4MB), or find buy-nothing-new online groups.

Choosing consciously

If you do need to buy something new, look to buy an item that is:

  • made to last
  • made from sustainably sourced or recycled materials
  • repairable
  • recyclable.

Closing the loop

When you are finished with an item, you can close the loop by :

  • passing it onto friends or family, or through rehoming Facebook groups
  • selling or donating
  • recycling or composting appropriately, if reuse is not an option.
