Post-extinction huia soundings | Sally Ann McIntyre
Free to attend, all welcome
This season, we’re honoured to present four reflective exhibitions examining themes of history, memory, culture, and our connection to place. Escape the winter cold and step inside our stunning heritage-listed galleries to celebrate the launch of these four important exhibitions, along with a haunting live performance of 19th century audio from exhibiting artist Sally Ann McIntyre.
About the exhibitions:
Chogh چوغ | Curated by Alia Qasim Zada & Elyas Alavi
Featuring artists: Razia Ghazal, Sha Sarwari, Alia Qasim Zada, Tamana Alizada, Sher Ali, Reza Foladi.
Chogh is the Hazaragi word for “thread”, this exhibition brings together six Australian-Hazara artists whose works speak from lived experience exploring migration, identity, gender and belonging.
Requiem in Power (RIP) | Gabrielle Skye Nehrybecki & Olive Guardiani
Grounded in material, ecological, and existential concerns, this collaborative exhibition by Gabrielle Skye Nehrybecki and Olive Guardiani memorialises local trees that were torn down to build a solar farm.
Around Here | Heidi Schoenheimer
This solo exhibition captures everyday life, exploring fleeting moments and familiar places of our local neighbourhoods.
Post-extinction huia soundings | Sally Ann McIntyre
This exhibition explores the calls of the extinct huia bird. The artist plays musical notation of huia calls on 19th century audio technology at sites where the bird was spotted, observing how living birds respond to a vanished voice, highlighting relationships that have existed for millennia.
Opening event activation:
Artist Sally Ann McIntyre will be activating the fascinating wax cylinders that are featured in her exhibition, Post-extinction huia soundings. Be sure to come along to witness this haunting live performance of 19th century audio.
