Lowering of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags on 26 January

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags will be flown at half-mast at Darebin Council venues on Thursday 26 January 2023.

Council’s resolution on 21 August 2017 included that Council:

  • “acknowledges that January 26 marks the beginning of the British invasion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands and oppression of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and is therefore not an appropriate date for an inclusive national celebration.”
  • “acknowledges the first Day of Mourning was held on January 26, 1938, being the 150th anniversary of the British invasion.”
