Darebin Council stands in solidarity with the Fitzroy Stars Football and Netball Club following the recent on-court incident in which its netball players were subjected to racism.
Incidents like this serve as a reminder that, while progress has been made, there is still significant work to do. Genuine systemic change is not just necessary; it is urgently needed.
Darebin Mayor Cr Emily Dimitriadis supports the Fitzroy Stars in their call for accountability and cultural safety.
“There is no place for racism in sport, in Darebin, or anywhere. We stand by the Fitzroy Stars and their players, and the officials who reported the behaviour to the tribunal. Sport should be a space for physical activity and social connection where everyone feels safe and supported to participate."
Darebin Council believes every player, official, volunteer and spectator deserves to enjoy a sporting environment free from racism, discrimination and harm.
We will continue to advocate for stronger education, accountability and cultural safety across the community.
