For the first time, Darebin City Council has aligned actions in the 2026-27 Our Darebin Action Plan to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as a framework to demonstrate how work at a local level contributes to the global agenda.

The SDGs provide a framework to tackle major challenges facing humanity and the planet. All UN member states have agreed to work towards the 17 Goals and their 169 Targets and 231 Indicators by 2030.

At the 30 June 2025 Council Meeting, Darebin Councillors voted to embed the SDGs into planning and reporting and map their alignment to Initiatives in the Our Darebin Plan 2025-29.

Out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, 56% of Our Darebin Plan Initiatives align to 3 SDGs with the balance of 44% aligning across a further 12 SDGs, highlighting alignment between the SDGs and issues that are important to the community:

  • Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions (26%)
  • Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities (16%)
  • Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and communities (14%).

In addition to these identified goals many other Our Darebin Plan actions, driven by local needs and other mandates, will also contribute to SDG targets.
