Preschool Field Officers help educators at funded kindergarten programs to meet the learning needs of all children.

About the Preschool Field Officer Program

The Preschool Field Officer (PSFO) program provides practical advice and support to educators working in kindergarten services funded by the Victorian Government. PSFOs work with kindergarten educators to build their skills in working with children with diverse learning needs.

PSFOs provide support that complements the valuable knowledge and relationships already held by early childhood educators working across the Darebin community.

PSFOs can support kindergarten educators working with children who present with diverse learning needs. This could include improving play skills, building social connections, communicating with peers, emotional regulation, and learning to thrive at kindergarten.

PSFOs can support kindergarten educators with:

  • strengthening observations of a child in their early years setting
  • building partnerships with families and carers
  • developing educational programs and planning
  • providing expert information, resources, and referral pathways.

Support can be provided on-site in the kinder, or remotely by phone or online meeting.

How to request support

Educators working in all Victorian Government funded kinder services can request support, including Early Start Kinder, 3-Year-Old Kinder, 4-Year-Old Kinder, and Pre-Prep.

Educators must have the informed consent of a parent, guardian, or caregiver before making a request for support. This is to make sure parents/guardian/caregiver understands the reason for the request and what to expect from your engagement with the PSFO program.

We are happy to provide advice on developing your request and starting the conversation with families in your service – please email psfo.team@darebin.vic.gov.au or call 0460 544 531 at any stage.

A request for support can be submitted via our online form.

Request PSFO Support

After you make a request for support

Your request will be reviewed by the PSFO program leader who will reach out if any more information is needed. We aim to review your request within 2 weeks.

Once accepted, your request will be allocated to one of our Preschool Field Officers who will be in touch with next steps.

A PSFO can provide a range of support to educators. Common supports and strategies used by PSFOs include:

  • coaching on inclusion supports so every child can participate meaningfully at kinder
  • role modelling key strategies to positively guide behaviour
  • supporting program planning and adaptations to suit children with diverse learning needs
  • helping educators work effectively with families and external professionals (e.g. speech therapist, occupational therapist)
  • referring children and families to other support agencies if needed.
