What hard waste we do and don't collect

To make sure we can collect your hard rubbish, please follow the collection guidelines. That includes what you can put out, when to do it, and how to set up your pile.

Items collected for recycling

Please sort the following items into four separate piles for recycling purposes.

  • scrap metal. This includes ovens, stoves, washing machines, dryers, BBQs and hot water systems
  • bed mattresses and bases
  • Ewaste. This includes TVs, computers, laptops, printers, monitors, keyboards, radios, CD and DVD players, hair dryers and power tools
  • car tyres, at a maximum of four car tyres (not 4WD tyres)

Items collected for landfill

The following items are accepted for landfill disposal. Consider alternative ways to reduce waste before putting out for collection.

Keep the below items in one neat pile:

  • Furniture 
  • Toys and sporting equipment
  • Timber and logs (excluding fence palings): Neatly stacked no more than 10 pieces, each up to 1.5 m long and 15 cm wide.
  • Carpet – up to three rolls
  • Floor lino and vinyl
  • Small glass items like drinking glasses, wrapped and placed in a secured box marked glass (we don't collect glass in plastic bags)

Items not collected

Please note: the items listed below are not eligible for hard waste collection and will not be collected 

Some of the below items are accepted at the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre. Note that fees may apply:

  • Gas bottles and fire extinguishers (you can also return these to the supplier)
  • Liquids such as oils and paints
  • Batteries of any type
  • Large glass items, e.g. windows, mirrors, shower screens, glass doors
  • Light globes and tubes
  • 4WD or truck tyres
  • Commercial, industrial or business waste
  • Building construction and renovation material

  • Fence panels and fence palings
