Basketball game at Narrandjeri Stadium open day

It was so great to see the community joining together to enjoy the Community Open Day at Narrandjeri Stadium on Saturday 23 May, 2022.

There were many “oohs” and “aahs” as people checked out the new $34 million state-of-the-art sustainably designed venue, which includes 4 outdoor courts and 4 indoor courts including a 340-seat showcourt.

Hundreds of people came along to have fun and learn new skills as they warmed the courts with basketball, netball, badminton, tennis, volleyball and pickleball, gathered at the café for tasty snacks and visited the face painting, bike smoothie and info stalls.

Joining in the action was Darebin Netball Association lifetime member Lyn Smith, who has been playing netball since she was nine, umpiring since she was 14 and still umpires now at 64.

Families at Narrandjeri Stadium open day

Lyn was so happy to make it to the open day with her family to see the new venue, catch up with her netball community and is delighted about what Narrandjeri Stadium means for the future.

“I’m looking forward to umpiring in this lovely new stadium that we’ve got here and then later on for my granddaughters to start playing when they’re old enough,” she said.

Karina and her family also loved their time at the Community Open Day, especially with the range of sports and entertainment on offer, as they “all like something different”.

“One likes soccer, the other basketball and the other one likes futsal so this was perfect,” Karina said.

They will definitely be back and Karina said they are so glad to see these fantastic facilities in their neighbourhood.

Narrandjeri means ‘woman leader’ in Wurundjeri Woi wurrung language, and the new stadium is designed to help boost people’s participation in sport and community activities, especially women and girls, providing a welcoming, culturally inclusive space for our diverse community.

Everyone is welcome to get involved at this amazing new venue and join in sports and activities for all ages and abilities. There are kids’ programs, casual court hire and permanent bookings available.
