Update on Petition tabled on 28 July 2025 Council Meeting, Protect Two Significant Trees at 148 Ballantyne St Thornbury, and Improve Darebin Council’s Tree Protection Policies.
Following Council’s inspection, it was determined that the application to remove the trees does not meet the criteria outlined in the Darebin Tree Protection on Private Property Local Law 2019. Accordingly, the application has been declined.
The Management of Tree Protection on Private Property Policy 2019 guides decision-making under the local law and reinforces Council’s commitment to protecting and enhancing Darebin’s urban tree canopy as a vital part of neighbourhood amenity, environmental sustainability, and character. The policy prioritises tree retention and requires that all alternatives to removal be thoroughly considered.
The two trees in question are of significant age. While their Useful Life Expectancy (ULE) is difficult to determine precisely, an independent assessment commissioned by Council estimates it to be between 5 and 15 years and may change over time due to various factors.
The applicants retain the right to seek a review of this decision or to reapply for a permit, either through the same process or via a planning permit application.
