Protect Preston Market
The Market is the heart of our community. It’s a precious source of employment, social connection, and of course, quality, affordable food — which is more important now than ever.
The fight to protect the Market has been a long one. Find out what happened, learn more about Council’s role and involvement, and access previous updates on the Preston Market Your Say page.
We remain committed to working with traders, the community, State Government and the landowner to protect and support our thriving market — now and into the future.
Project Status
In early August 2023, Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny announced new planning controls, including a Heritage Overlay, to guide future development of the market site. This followed advice from an independent advisory committee that found more work was needed to protect the heritage significance of the market.
The new controls require the substantial retention of the existing market, while allowing for the delivery of more than 1,000 new homes. A precinct-specific Development Plan Overlay and Heritage Overlay will help protect the market’s historical, aesthetic, technical and social value.
At this stage, there are no further public processes or updates. If anything changes, we’ll share updates on this page.
