World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) falls on June 15 each year.

Elder abuse is mistreatment of an older person committed by someone the older person has a relationship of trust with - such as a partner, family member, friend or carer. It may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect.

Elder maltreatment can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences. The main day on 15 June is when we join the world in voicing our opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on older people and celebrate older members of our community.

This year, the Warm Safe Home (WSH) project uses the icon of the house to talk about older people’s right to feel safe and live free from fear. Join us to create your own handcrafted paper home to share what a Warm Safe Home means to you and hear from Gary Ferguson, Education Coordinator, Seniors Rights Victoria.
