Darebin is pleased to see that the Minister for Planning yesterday released the SAC report of recommendations on the future of the Preston Market Precinct (draft Amendment C182) - which recommends substantial retention of the market.

Council will carefully consider the 271 page SAC report to fully understand all of the recommendations.

We’re also pleased to hear the Minister considers that more work is needed to protect the historical, aesthetic, technical and social significance of the market.

Darebin Mayor Cr Julie Williams said today’s news regarding the SAC’s recommendation to the Minister to retain the market is positive.

“We are encouraged that the Victorian Government's announcement acknowledges the cultural, social and historical significance of the Preston Market,” Mayor Williams said.

“We have advocated strongly against the demolition of the market and for the current footprint of the sheds to stay in place and it appears the government has heard this message.

“There are some positive signs that the market will be protected, however the Minister will make the ultimate decision on whether the market will indeed remain in place for generations to come, in the coming months.”

Council remains committed to protecting the Preston Market and will carefully consider the SAC report to fully understand its recommendations.
